Established in 1913 by Dr. Charlotte Ferguson-Davie, the wife of the first Anglican Bishop of Singapore, St. Andrew’s Mission Hospital (SAMH) has been serving children in the community since its founding years. Today, SAMH aims to meet the needs of underserved and disadvantaged children through St. Andrew’s Autism Centre and St. Andrew’s Community Hospital.
St. Andrew’s Autism Centre (SAAC)
Operated by SAAC, St. Andrew’s Autism School (SAAS) offers a comprehensive developmental curriculum in accord with evidence-based practices for students with autism aged seven to 18. Adopting a person-centred approach to designing meaningful Individual Education or Transitions Plans (IEP/ITP) for each student enables SAAS to provide effective interventions and instructional programmes referenced to a customised curriculum, where each student’s potential can be maximised. A core aspect of SAAS is its Personal Futures Planning. In line with Singapore’s SPED-Framework vision, “Active in Community, Valued in Society”, from age 13, all SAAS students undergo a structured transition programme in preparation for their best post-18 outcomes.
St. Andrew’s Community Hospital (SACH)
SACH’s Paediatric Inpatient Rehabilitation Service provides post-acute, rehabilitative, respite and long-term care to high-medical support needs children, including those with special needs. The hospital’s person-centred paediatric care programme provides customised physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and music therapy, as well as in-house tutoring to these children. The SACH Paediatric Care Team, together with volunteers, organizes community outings for the young patients to provide opportunities for them to learn about life beyond the hospital setting, as well as to socialize with volunteers.
